Lewis and Clark   Exploratory Center The Lewis and Clark Exploratory Center of Virginia will celebrate the legacy of the Lewis and Clark Expedition, and especially the Virginia contribution. This includes the roles of Thomas Jefferson and Meriwether Lewis, who planned the expedition; Meriwether Lewis and William Clark who led the Corps of Discovery; and James Monroe, who negotiated the Louisiana Purchase, thus making the western territory part of the America that Lewis and Clark explored.
Jefferson's role in the
 Lewis and Clark Expedition.
On January 18, 1803, President Thomas Jefferson sent a confidential message to the Congress of the United States of America, requesting $2,500 "for the purpose of extending the external commerce of the U.S." Though modestly phrased, the letter marked the fulfillment of Jefferson's long-held dream of Western exploration and launched one of the great heroic adventures in American history -- the voyage of Lewis and Clark and the Corps of Discovery.
