MINUTES OF THE OHIO RIVER CHAPTER

October 19, 2002

 

 

Members of the Ohio River Chapter of the LCTHF met at 4:30 p.m. on October 19, 2002, at Ovations Banquet House in Greenville, Ohio.

 

Present were Bob Anderson, Beading Bear, Barb Bowden, Bruce   Bowden, Brad Brakke, Georgia Brakke, Polly Brown, John Burkett, Karen Burkett, Cathy Burnes, Kenneth Burnes, Bob Christy, John Cimarosti (Hamilton, Ohio, County Park Service), Dan Clark, Esther Clark, Blue Corn, David Cox, Mara Cox, Harvey Denham, Esther Duncan, Susan Gray (Garst Museum), Cedar Heart, Beverly Hurst, Paul Hurst, Skip Jackson, Marie Kaiser, Jim Mallory, Paula Mallory, Bob Marchal, Patricia Marchal, Robert Marchal (Darke County Bicentennial Commission), Don Meldon, Pat Meldon, Chief Hawk Pope, Melassa Pope, Dick Ramm, Judy Ramm, Jerry Robertson, Linda Robertson, Don Schaller, Catherine Sharp, Gene Sharp, Nancy Spencer, Stan Spencer, Nancy Stump, Julia  Teuschler, Tom Williams, Janice Wilson, Jerry Wilson,  Doug Wozniak, and Margaret Wozniak.

 

Reports

 

The minutes of the July 31, 2001, meeting were approved.

 

The treasurer reported a balance of $2,445.  Of this, $1,017 is earmarked for brochures for the Patrick Gass Project.  The treasurer’s report was approved.  Dues for 2003 can be sent to Jerry Robertson at any time.

 

Old Business

 

Tom Williams reported that the ORC Patch Project is waiting for a final design from Jon Stealey’s art students at Bluffton College.

 

Jim Mallory distributed updated copies of the chapter bylaws showing changes that were approved at the March 26, 2000, meeting in Grand Rapids.  The changes are in Article III—Officers and Duties, Section 1 and Section 1 B.  

 

Section 1 was amended to read: 

 

“Officers of the Chapter shall be:  President, President Elect, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, and Communications Officer.  These officers shall be elected at the spring meeting and take office at that meeting.  The term of the office is one year.  There shall be five directors elected in the same manner for one-year terms.  The officers and directors shall meet periodically to propose matters for the chapter to discuss and bring to a vote.  The Board of Directors shall consist of the six officers and five directors.”

 

Section 1 B was added to read:

 

“The President Elect shall assist the president and perform all duties as are ordinarily incident to the office.  In the case of absence or inability of the President, the duties of the office shall be performed by the President Elect.”

 

New Business

 

Matt Pierce, Chair of the Indiana Lewis and Clark  Bicentennial Commission, is receiving requests for speakers for Indiana meetings.  Anyone interested should contact Matt at mpierce@bloomington.in.us or call (812) 524-8744.

 

Announcements

 

The Falls of the Ohio River Festival is on October 26 and 27; workers needed.

 

Workers are needed for the Ohio School Board Association meetings in Columbus on November 12.

 

The Army Corps of Engineers meets on November 5-6.  Contact Paige Cruze.

 

The unveiling of the York Statue in Louisville will occur in early 2003.

 

Registration forms for the Jefferson West Signature Event in Charlottesville on January 14-19 were distributed.

 

Workers are needed for the Kentucky School Board Association meetings January 24-25.

 

Volunteer time sheets are needed at the end of the year.

 

Round Table

 

Members shared their recent activities relative to the Lewis and Clark Expedition.  These included projects relative to Patrick Gass, Mary Maxwell Bratton, Nathaniel Pryor, George Drouillard, the St. Charles chapter’s bicentennial boat trip, trail travels, seasonal interpretation, school curricula for grades K and 5, Monticello posters and teaching materials, the Lewis and Clark IMAX movie, the second signature event at the Falls of the Ohio, beading, and recent readings.

 

Notes

 

Prior to the business meeting, members toured the Garst Museum, Ft. Jefferson, and the Shawnee Prairie Preserve.  Polly Brown and Georgia Brakke provided a picnic lunch at Greenville City Park after the museum tour.

 

After the business meeting, members enjoyed a buffet dinner and then reconvened at the Council House across from the museum for a presentation on Indian culture by Susan Gray.
