Ohio River Chapter- LCTHF

Meeting Minutes

May 22, 1999----Lexington, Kentucky

Tour
The Chapter started the day with lunch and a tour of Ashland, Henry
Clay's estate in Lexington. After a quick look at the Todd house,
where Mary Todd Lincoln lived prior to her marriage to the 16th President,
the tour headed for a walk thru Gratz Park, a restored neighborhood adjacent
to Transylvania University. This area included one of the towns early
churches where Henry Clay worshipped when he was home from Washington. The
group then walked back thru the Transylvania campus to the schools cafeteria
where we were all overfed.

Meeting

Welcome and opening comments by President Jon Stealey
Nine "first timers" attended along with twenty
others.

The minutes from the November meeting in Columbus, OH were reviewed
and approved.

The Treasurer reminded those present to pay their 1999 dues and
reported that the Chapter currently has $910 in our bank account and
approximately 70 members including a number of family memberships.

Bicentennial Council report by Skip Jackson.
The Chapter needs to get the Ohio River schedule
from the Discovery Expedition as soon as they decide it so that we can help
organize and coordinate their activities on the Ohio River during 2003.

Julie Fanselow is updating her Trail Guide for the
Bicentennial and wants to include the portion of the country from D.C. to St
Louis that has not been included up to now. The ORC can help by identifying
stops, campsites, points of interest, etc.

Skip clarified the responsibility of the Council. It
is chartered to act as a clearing house and coordinator of activities by
others-as such it will not directly conduct any activities of its own. Their
meetings are open to everyone. Attendence is a good way to meet the people
who are involved in every phase of the Bicentennial Commemoration-both
private and governmental groups participate.

2002 Annual Meeting of the LCTHF-Scheduled for Louisville.
The Filson Club will act as official host and has
made initial contact with a host hotel. The Chapter expects to help with the
function in whatever way is required. 500-800 people are expected to attend.

Discovery Expedition
Bob Anderson gave an update on the keel boat being
built in St Charles, MO and on the activities of the two pirogues that are
already in the water. The St. Charles Rendezvous over the May 15-16 weekend
was a success and included the recruiting of several new members for the
reinactment on the rivers between Pittsburgh and Montana. The ORC has
informally agreed to play a key role in this portion of their trip during
the Bicentennial. In a preliminary "adventure", the boats are tentatively
scheduled to float from Louisville to Ft. Massac in Illinois beginning about
the first of October, 1999.

Chapter Patch/Emblem
Membership looked at a couple potential designs
and voted to have Tom Williams continue to work with a small committee to
finalize the design. The committee will complete the work with consideration
given to the trademark/copyright issues. The Chapter would "own" the design
and members could use it for hats, shirts, jackets, etc.

Bicentennial Committee
Jon Stealey gave an update on the exhibition at the
University of Scanton that he and Bud Clark just completed with Bob Weir.
They have dicussed the idea of having a moving exhibit during the
Bicentennial. Jon also gave a brief update on his photo Journal and reported
that it will be completed within two years.

Jim Mallory proposed a meeting schedule that includes the remainder
of 1999 and for the entire 2000 year.
1999 National Meeting-North Dakota-time TBA; Fall 1999
meeting--October 23, 1999
2000 Spring meeting--20May 2000; 2000 National meeting

soon as they are each determined.
